I have an old mobile phone, can i just buy a pay as you go sim card and use it?

Answers:
If its not locked ,Yes !
you might have to unlock it first. ask in your mobile shop.
indeed!
depending what network it was originally used for if you get a card for the same network it should be fine.If you want to go with another network you can unlock your phone online.Just search for doctor unlock or unlocking mobile
yeah just go to am mobile phone shop, get it unlocked if it isnt already. put in the sim card and voila.(obviously you need to charge the battery and stuff first!)
Thats just what I have done!
yep! u can use any network if its unlocked! if not it has to be the network it was previous on but yes u can still do it!
Yes.
you can as long as its not one for a 3g phone. ask in a shop if you are still unsure
Yes and No for the following reasons:
If you got our phone from a network operator on contract, then you can only put that networks sim card in as it will be locked to them.

OR,
if it was from a network operator, then you can make arrangements for your phone to be unlocked. This will then allow any networks cards in your phone. This can be done in most markets, HOWEVER, if you do it this way and you get any problems with the phone - the stall may say that it's done at your own risk. Most mobile operators offer this facility as well although they are likely to charge an admin fee for the provilege (although if anything does go wrong - you can blame the network and they're responsible as it was done via an official channel)

If you purchased a 'sim free' mobile then you can use ANY sim card in that phone.
yes I think you can get e free sim from virgin
depends if it was a pay as you go phone before
some mobiles are locked to a certain provider ie orange , vodaphone etc .most can be quite easily unlocked .some just need a code inputted via the keypad others need to be linked to a computer to be changed .google the make and model and se what other people have done to get it unlocked ..at the end of the day it wont cost a lot for a phone shop to unlock it for you ..
yes, you can directly open it and take tha sim card from it and you can put it into the new one.
I was told my six year old phone would soon longer work because of a change in the signalling. So I had to buy new phone.
The system is different in every country - you haven't ststed yours ? I'll presume then you are in the UK. as this is supposed to be the UK and Ireland branch of Answers.
It depend's on the type of Phone - for example a Nokia will take any sim normally - but other's like seimens and motorola are usually locked on to a particular supplier - my present phone does the job, send's and recieves text - no photo's or anything which is ok for me,it is a Nokia; My wife/lifes phone is on the blink and she wants to change to 02 because the signal on Orange round here is abysmal.
If it's your old phone it won't be locked out but it really depends on the phone as to which network or sim card it will accept, once you have found out which then it's just a case of charging it up and off you go - this is an important tip, never top up the charge in short burst's always deplete the battery as far as you can and then give it a full charge - the battries have built in memories and if you train it to short bursts it will then start needing to be charged often and will only take a short charge - ruining the battery- my wife/life has to charge her's every day and its only 2 yrs old; mine is over three years old and I still only charge it once a week - purely because she keeps giving her's little booster charges and thus ruining the battery life.x
Yes, you can, no problem
Yes, you should be able to use it. You may have to fully recharge it first if you haven't used it for a while.
