Is there any point in paying or having a TV licence?

If you are a single person that is living alone, you will find that the costs rise and multliply. But what I don't understand is, why do you need to have a TV licence? Suposing that the cable packages cover their licence costs. Where does the money go? Could I find out and take legal actions, or simply refuse to pay it?
Where could I go to find out my rights?
The goverment have to realise that we are not as rich as they are and they should stop turning England into America
Please DO NOT put any silly answers
Hope that you can help

I personally think that its pointless because you have pay for buying a television, then pay for a license and then pay for channels to shown. I think its ridiculous
No the TV licence should now be scrapped the BBC sold off to private enterprise
u have 2 pay it but u dont have 2 do it all at once pay it each month think its about £10 hope this helps
If the BBC want to raise money that bad then they should put adverts on TV. What makes me laugh is that the BBC own that SKY channel TV Gold or something with all the old programs on and that has adverts!!

Strange.

I totally agree with you, I live on my own and every year more things rise in cost. I am struggling to pay it all (especially council tax, 25% discount or not) and if it goes up anymore I fear I'll have to sell my house as I can't run it.
If you have a tv set on your premises, you have to pay the licence fee, whether you like it or not.
If you do not pay, you can get a hefty fine.
When it comes to the bbc, you have no rights!
The money funds the B.B.C. and its the same thing as the council tax you have no options you have to pay or wait for it they can send you to prison if you dont . what a pathetic law
I don't watch much BBC and if I could opt out of a license fee I wouldn't watch them at all.its pure high way robbery what we pay for the BBC package.its about time it was abolished lets be fair it isn't chicken feed anymore its a hefty chunk of some folks spare cash.
I agree the TV licence should be scrapped.

I do not watch BBC programs, simply because they all crap.

Why should I have to pay for these rubbish programs to be made?
If you don't watch TV then don't get a licence. If you do watch TV then the current law says you must buy a licence or face a fine of around £1000. The licence pays for the BBC. Everyone else is paid for by advertising etc.
If you have a televison in your home you must have a TV licence otherwise you will get a £1000.00 fine and trust me they will get you.

You pay the license fee so we can have the BBC which is about as unamerican and you can get. So are you suggesting that we scape the licence fee and let the bbc have adverts like.err American Television.

The other point about the TV license is to give the BBC a revenue stream independent of govenmernt.
The money goes to the BBC to pay for all of the TV and radio channels we get from them. It also pays for the world service and their excellent website. You will have to remove every television from your property if you intend on not paying it. Even then, you will get regular visits to ensure that you do not have a television at your address. You could take legal action and refuse to pay it but will be wasting your time and money. The money from cable packages does not go to the BBC. Other TV channels are finded by advertising.
Given that Americans do not have to pay a license fee, as such, I'm not sure why you are suggesting that the government are turning England into America.
if you have a tv tuner in your house, by this I mean a TV, a VCR/tivo/DVD recorder, or a tv card in your pc, or a cable or sky box. You by law have to have a TV license. This covers and pays for the BBC services both analog (bbc1 and 2 radio 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc) and digital (bbc news, cbbc, bbc3, and all the rest of them), you cant just have for example a monitor and a sky box and say you dont watch bbc stuff as they will get you for uk gold .
Although tv detector vans can work its much easier now just to assume everyone has a tv then they just chase up the houses that dont have a license making half hearted apologies if the house really doesnt have a telly (you dont need one for the radio)
then in 6 months go back again to make sure there still isnt a telly there. Repeat for several years every 6 months :)
At the end of the day if there is a telly in the house just get a license as you will be found sooner or later . As a previous poster said pay by dd to split the cost.
The TV licence should be scrapped, it's about time the BBC stopped relying on our money. We have so much choice now that the licence fee is not justified.

Unfortunately until the government change the rules we will have to pay whether we want or not.
Be warned. The detectors have a hand held that will catch you.If you dont have a license the fine is £1000.The system was set up to finance the creation of tele, radio ect in the uk.What is your problem with paying for such a great service?Let me get this straight, you can afford cable, but dont think you can afford to pay for your license?poor poppy!!We all have to pay, what makes you special?I think you should refuse to pay it.A stint in prison will do a princess like you alot of good,me thinks! For the record,America has advertising non-stop to finance their tele.Think of all the great shows you have watched over your life produced by the beeb.Think hard.Maybe we can get some starving africans to pay yours!Selfish!
If you receive TV programs you must by law have a TV licence. If you are 75 years or older it is free, if not you have to pay. Fine for not having a licence is up to £1,000. If you only use the TV for watching DVDs you do not need a licence but you may have a hell of a job persuading the licence authorities that this is the case.
