Are IPods worth the hassle?
My husband deleted LiveWire from his computer by accident, so my daughter could not look at her songs. When she tried to reinstall using the CD sent to her she was told to plug in her IPod and promptly lost 800 songs from it. Why?

The software on the CD formatted her iPod (wiped it clean). If she hasn't written any other data to the iPod since then, then most of her music will still be recoverable.
Download & Install some data recovery software, such as Recover My Files (or something similar). Set it up to search your iPod drive and search for music files. It should find them and restore them - to your computer's hard drive - which can then be resent to the iPod.

Music downloaded using Limewire and other music file sharing networks is usually illegal copies of copyrighted songs. The people sharing the songs do not have legal right to do so and people downloading the songs are violating copyright law.
In the case of your iPod, it sounds like your daughter went through steps that reformatted the hard drive on the iPod. I don't have an iPod myself, but that is the most common cause of disappearance events like this. I know of software that recovers memory cards and hard drives for cameras and computers but I don't know of any such software for the iPod.
i pods are extremely overrated
I don't know what all the fuss is over IPods. MP3 players have been around for a long time. Better value would be to install an MP3 player on a smart phone. No need then to carry around two different devices. I use a Palm Treo: music is stored on a removable SD card.

it is 10 times better, best of all it fits with every single ipod accesory on the market
