What is the stuff that leaks out of alkaline batteries if left somewhere too long and how do i get rid of it?

Its in the battery chamber of my camera

Answers:
i believe that is battery acid. one way to remove the acid is to use a "Q-Tip" with baking soda(arm and hammer is an excellent choice). dip the q-tip in a slurry and swab where the acid is. then use the other side or a new q-tip to dry the area. you may have to do this a few times. the baking soda will fizz as the slurry works on the acid. when no fizz occurs, it is clean. just make sure you use a little bit at a time. you can also check with a local camera store for more tips.
Its the mixture inside the battery.I think its made of ammonia paste. It leaks out when not used for a long time.
it is Zinc and Mangonese Dioxide
this slowly corrodes the case and leaks out
to remove it follow our friends advice 2nd answer
cotton bud and baking soda works well
below is a brief discription how it is made:-
A battery consists of a steel can, nickel-plated at both ends, the negative, flat terminal being electrically isolated with a nylon seal. Inside the can is the manganese dioxide cathode, a separator membrane, the powdered zinc anode in a potassium hydroxide water electrolyte. A brass axial-core pin is electrically connected to the negative terminal.
it's battery acid, and it can damage the appliance beyond repair.
