My nickon digital camera is flashing a red hand and cant get rid of it-any ideas??

Answers:
take the batteries out and let it set a day with out them then put them back in
u need to turn on the flash or batteries low
have you checked out the instructions? Or you could try the Nikon website they may be able to help.
If a hand shows I think it means that the camera isn't being held steady enough. Are you tryong to take a photo indoors where there is insufficeint light.? Try placing it on a shelf or table or steady it against a door frame.
do you have it on a night-time photo style settings? My camera has something similar to this hand, which is basically telling me to keep steady due to the longer exposure time.If I don't, I get blurry photos. So check your piccies also. If this is the case you need to put it back on regular photo taking.
It means that you are on "image stabilisation" mode which is
automatic when you take a picture in low light conditions. It
is telling you to hold the camera steady because you are in
a low light situation which will require a long exposure, in most
cameras around 1/40 second or lower. Or you could be out
of the range of the flash (if on) - if this is the case, get closer
to the subject. Lastly it also could mean that the batteries are
low and need changing or charged. Read the instructions, you
may have the flash set on "off" mode, check it out and. Good luck.
Send it to Nikon customer support. They will repair it for about £200.
They still have my camera after 2 months because I refused to pay over £170 to repair it after recently paying £125 for a different repair.
Their after sales service is useless.
If you don't have image stabilization (Nikon calls this VR.), blind_wood_carver and churie are correct. It means that you have your flash defeated or are in a mode that defeats it automatically. The blinking hand reminds you NOT to try to hand hold your camera. If you DO have VR, I guess the others are correct, but I don't know that for a fact.

"When lighting is poor and the flash is off, shutter speeds will slow and pictures may be blurred. If the shutter speed required for exposure is very slow, a [hand icon] (camera shake) warning will appear in the monitor. Use of a tripod or support is recommended." Coolpix 4600 manual
