The PSU blowing up is a common fault due to the original PSU being specified very close to its maximum!
I had the same problem and bought a replacement PSU from www.digidave.co.uk (A universal Sunny 12V PSU) although looking there now I cannot see it on their website. might be worth an email - cost me £15 so was the cheapest solution.
Otherwise, try this PSU from Maplin (its more expensive tho at £24.99)

Basically, you want a 12V 2.5A (or greater) power supply unit that comes with a selection of DC jack adaptors
If it helps, once you replace the PSU you will find you "never" have to again, plus I found that some of the annoying gllitches, i.e. slow menus, box latchup disappeared - which I think was due to a PSU working on the limits of its specification, but cannot say conclusively!
