It is a consumer video device which allows users to capture television programming to internal hard disk storage for later viewing (sometimes called "time shifting").
Tivo stores records TV shows on an internal hard drive for the viewer to watch later. Tivo also has a certain amount of intelligence as it monitors the type of tv shows you regularly record and then records shows that match your preferences. Example, you may like ER. If Tivo see's another hospital related drama it will record it for you without being asked for you to view later.
Timeshifting capabilities allows the viewer to pause and rewind live television broadcasts.
