I've got a 7 years old SONY Hi8 camcorder.Recently I had problems with a dirty tape, the picture went?
completely. It has been resolved with a cleaning tape. But suddenly I had problems of similar nature.Although my tapes have been reused quite a few times, in my opinion they are in clean condition. The problems is not knowing whether it is still the head that is dirty or one or all (7) tapes I've got.I'm not even sure how to use a cleaning tape properly. In one shop they said 20 sec, in the other 2 min.I'd be very grateful for some advice.

Dont use cotton buds on the video heads. you could 1) leave lint on the heads or 2) break the heads.
You need a lint-free cloth and - ideally - something to hold it flat against the head drum.
Manual cleaning is quite an intricate operation (to perform safely, without harming the heads), and shouldn't really be tried unless you are really confident that you know what you are doing.

i have found that the tapes can break down over a period of time. Clean the heads again and try a new tape. Try a little alcohol on a cotton bud gently on the heads. It should clean them up OK and you will see the dirt on the bud.
use head cleaner three times. let the tape run fully until it stops count that once.
after cleaning three times get a pack of new tapes, i think they have a five pack with one head cleaner in the packet. use that new head cleaner once. after that use new tapes from the packet. if you have to view old tape use head cleaner before and after it. treat old tapes as infectious. Manufacturers recommend using head cleaner at least once in three months.
its better to use only sony tapes. but any make can be used as long as its hi8.
Try your tapes on another camcorder if you can, if not try some tests with a brand new good quality name brand tape. This should point you in the right direction as to where the problem is.
20 seconds is the normal for a head cleaning tape with a few (no more than 3-4) drop of isopropyl alcohol DO NOT USE ANY THING ELSE like meths, washing up liquid or bleach etc.
I try to avoid using head cleaners and use a Q tip, always use new tapes if you can and always store tapes in there boxes. I know this is all basic stuff but always look after your head
