Is there any equipment I could buy that will allow me to turn my old photo negatives into digital pictures?

Answers:
Yes, there are scanners which scan negatives.
Hewlett Packard PhotoSmart Scanner S20 does it.

A lot of new three-in-one type copiers have a slot for negatives over the copier so that old negatives can be scanned in and converted to digital pics to be saved on a cd.
Almost any computer scanner and image software will allow you to do exactly this. Scanners are made by Epson, HP, Canon and many other companies, and can be bought for less than $100. You will need a computer with an available USB port. I have had excellent experience with Epson scanners.

As for software, even the cheapest image processing software will let you import the image and convert it into a positive image. I suggest Photoshop Elements but there are plenty of others.
