Tried to get my Sony Camera repaired from Sony, want £50 to just give it back! But its my property surely?!?!

I had to send my digital camera off to sony recently, its not under warranty any more, becuase a button on the back had broken. a cheapy little 20p one, the rest of the camera worked fine, but without the button you couldnt do a great deal. So i sent it to them and they charge a flat fee for repairs, whatever they are.£114!, but if i dont want to pay that, there is a refusal fee of £50 to just get it back!
what an absolute con, how can they do that? when i rang up and sent it off, they never told me about being trapped in this situation, i didnt agree to any Terms and conditions, so surely I must have some sort of footing in this case??!?! they never told me about any fees or anything.

their robbing gits,my ps2 blew up 11 months after buying it new, they wudnt give me a new one, only a reconditioned one,im not happy.didnt tell me that when i brouhgt it,i sympathise
I know how you feel, they wanted to charge me £90.00 just to look at mine, plus whatever the cost of the repairs were.

I told them to stick it i would buy a new one
I had the same with my DVD player. Its a rip off as once you've paid the money you are more or less forced to go ahead with the repair even if you think its not worth it. I was most annoyed as the assistant didn't explain the conditions properly up front.
go to watchdog website on the bbc, they have a Q & A thing about consumer rights it might help.

Ok, here's my laptop and your a pc repair man.

I want you to repair it for me, you have to find the fault which may or not be related directly to the symptoms i tell you.

Now, it's going to need stripping down and that could take 25 minutes alone, testing lots of components, maybe intermittant fault so you might have it sat there for hours before the fault appears.

You've found the fault, now your chasing part numbers, your looking up prices, making sure the parts are available so that i'm not sat waiting and screaming at you after a week because it's not back from repair.
So now your costing the repair based on how much time it will take how difficult it is, how many bleeding fingers you'll have, etc.

And now i want you to do all that work for nothing!
They should have made it clear that they charge £50 for an estimate, if they didn't then I don't think you are obliged to pay up. These flat fees are a con they charge £114 even if its a cheap repair, but of course if it's something expensive like a new circuit board, the cost suddenly jumps to £100s. It is better to take a camcorder to an independant specilalist repairer.
I would fight it, ask at your Citizens Advice Bureau what action you can take, but if there's none then (depending on the cost of a replacement) you could just tell them to stick it and that you'll tell all your friends to never buy Sony again. Sometimes it works.
Odd way round for Sony to do it. At Jessops we'd take the money for the estimate up front (£40 as of writing this) BEFORE sending it to Sony for assessment, to avoid ending up in this situation. Also covers shipping & handling charges.

And as for even considering it getting repaired in the first place. what people still don't realise is that (like it or not) we live in a throwaway society where consumer electronics goods are rarely economically repairable.
