Why did my Nokia 1100 ( Virgin ) not send txts from Spain?

Its Virgins fault. I'm with them and informed them I was going abroad, but found I couldn't text from Egypt, Italy, Sri Lanka or United Arab Emirates. But I was still charged for each one I tried to send! I rang them when I got back (789) and they said I had to ring them while I was abroad (on the equivalent to 789) while I was experiencing the problem, and then they would be able to sort it out. Haven't been abroad since then, so they haven't sorted it out.
Did you notify them you were going abroad and set up your 'roaming profile'?
