You can buy a contract sim card on it's own from vodafone and the other networks, and the contract is only 30 days. It does mean you have to use and existing phone or get a new one. I've just done this and got a cheap new phone on ebay. good luck

Go for a nokia 3220 cheep and it comes with a built in camera and GPRS not bad considering its price.
