A good all round camera needed?

Goodness me, what dedication and will power! Bravo! Well, I am a professional photographer and you have asked a question that has me stumped. The extremes of temperature are something I've never encountered but my reaction would be to buy either a Canon or Nikon and on top buy the waterproof housing. Mountaineering means travelling light and both manufacturers have a range of lightweight models with optional waterproof cases. I am a Nikon man and their ranges (mostly made for diving) are the Nikonos.
This is such a specialised field though I suggest you contact both Canon and Nikon for advice. Who knows, given the objective they may even help out! I don't know where you are situated in the world but if in the UK then the best Nikon dealer (100% Nikon) is Gray's of Westminster. 020 7828 4925. I brought a kodac z740 last year and found it great value for money it has 11 preset modes including sun snow backlight takes great sunsets and a manual option i'm just getting started into digital photography and i found this to be a very versatile camera under £200 took it to kos this year and it was over 40 degrees it also coped quite well last winter in the yoykshire dales
Fuji F30 about £200.00 but a great camera. It has also won various awards like what camera I think
The toughest digital camera currently is probably the Olympus Stylus 720SW.

but its operational temperature range is only 0c to 40c - it may still work if it's insulated in a warm pocket and only used for a quick shot.
An Olympus OM-1 film camera would fit the bill well. The only thing the battery does is run the meter. In freezing temperatures batteries won't last long and it can ruin your day.
If you're thinking digital, you'll want to go wtih a professional body that is weather sealed. Not knowing your budget its hard to say. The Olympus E-1 is going pretty cheaply now and is sealed against moisture and dust. Get a spare battery and keep it inside your coat to keep it warm.
