You might want to try the chicken n rice guy --he's actually a street vendor, but he's so popular, the line starts before he even sets up at 7pm.! It's arab food, gyros or chicken/lamb over rice.and it's cheap--5$ a plate.only problem is the wait on line and finding a place to sit and eat.
"The Best Halal" Cart is located at 53rd and 6th.
enjoy!

Central Perk!
Go go to Mcdonalds there on every freakin cornor and it's quick and cheap. Besides your in NYC why would you want to spend your time eating when you can be shopping and sightseeing?
These are pretty expensive but not the most expensive:

Gramercy Tavern -- New American/Continental -- Nice decor, not too loud, creative use of fresh seasonal ingredients, friendly unpretentious service. You need reservations

I Trulli -- Italian Cusine from Apulia region. Authentic, nice decor, outdoor garden. Also need reservations. E27th Street. There is also a wine bar down the block where you can sample wines and get small plates. Also, on the same block Blue Smoke -- great Barbeque moderate price very popular, also the Jazz Standard Club is in the Basement, has live Jazz and same food as restaurant.

New York Pizza experience -- inexpensive -- Arturo's on Houston St. Funky decor real crowded on Weekends.

Personal favorites, moderate -- Alfama -- Portuguese, Hudson St. Euskadi -- Basque/Spanish East 4th St. Live Gypsy Flamenco music Tuesday nights great fun.

PS Waste your time eating in New York?!! Miss some of the best dining expereinces in the World? Shopping!? !@#$
So many great places. Here are "some"of my favorites:

1) Pomaire, Chilean restaurant (order a pisco sour) info at www.pomiarenyc.com $$$
2)Otto, great Italian restaurant, pizza, pasta is fantastic. www.ottopizzeria.com $$$
3)Dos Caminos- Excellent Mexican, get the guacamole appetizer $$$ http://www.brguestrestaurants.com/.
4)Atlantic Grill-fantastic seafood, good prices and ambiance http://www.brguestrestaurants.com/. $$

Atlantic Grill and Pomarie are the least busiest
Hearth - Located in the East Village (a neighborhood that probably isn't on your tourist itinerary). If you're a foodie and a wino.this is a great spot. The food is on the high end on the cost side, but is a mix between comfort and high-class. I've been several times and the experience has always been great. If you're in for some adventure, there are 4 bar style seats that face directly into the open kitchen. The chef is a bit of a screamer, so it can be interesting.
