If you live in Wales, is it essential to learn Welsh?

Answers:
No. If you were to live in North Wales, especially counties such as Gwnnedd, the locals speak Welsh as a first language but learn English from the age of seven at school. Take into account that most television and films are in English and the level of tourism and you'll find most welsh people are bi-lingual.

My sister has lived in North Wales for nearly 15 years now and she isn't fluent but can follow the language. Her three children however, all speak Welsh as their first language.
Not at all.
Do not listen to the idiot below, who has clearly just read about Wales in childrens books.
it's up to you. The local(s) prefer people that speak welsh (most) because some are against England. But there isn't really much point because most Welsh people speak English.
Everyone who lives in large cities and towns in Wales seems to be able to speak English, just as native speakers. It would be nice to learn Welsh but probably not essential.
Don't be so stupid.
Only if you want to speak Welsh
not at all, my husband has lived in wales for 26yrs and cant speak a word of welsh, and even though my son is fluent in English and welsh he uses the English language far more, if you wanted to work in local government i think it would help if you could speak welsh but i honestly dont see a problem,
It not essential but I live in Cardiff and there are a few welsh speakers around. Im an currently learning Welsh and there is at least 40 people in 2 seperate classes learning along with me so it is getting more popular.
If you don't already live in Wales it is probably better not to move in. There is a gradual movement towards welsh- train announcements are given in welsh first so I've learn the platform numbers, and a phrase which means 'we apologise for the delay to your train'; some jobs give preference to welsh speakers. I don't mind any of this, but I do object to the radio stations stirring things up when there is an England v Wales match of any kind on. It is unnecessary and unsporting.
