How do Yahoo, Google and all these other "free" services make money?

Answers:
Advertisements mainly,
Look on the yahoo main page and it will have 'marketplace' as one of the sections where you will see advertising for HSBC and such.

And if you realise that just as many if not more people view that main page as will view their tv tonight then you can see why yahoo charge probably thousands of pounds a day to the companies that place an ad there.

Companies also pay high prices to get listed in the search engines quicker than the usual 4 - 6 week waiting period which is another source of money.
Ads and other paid services they provide.
advertisements.webhost.domain name.server.

they have other products/services aside from the free emails that they give us.
for example they also offer Hosting services to business.etc
advertisments on other sites. It costs other companies or sites to link off of yahoo or google

Companies will pay for advertisements. Yahoo, Google etc also provide fee paying services to the public and other companies.
A website's worth is based on gow many clicks it gets on a daily basis. so if it gets more clicks, it can charge higher rates for its ads
Its called advertising
Every time you say "Google", another dollar is made (This is almost true.)

Yes, as stated above, advertising is a HUGE part of it. Google & Yahoo! also own several different ventures (Google owns Blogger/BlogSpot.) Yahoo! mail is one of the most visited sites on the internet, and everytime you log on, there's a huge ad at the right of the age there to greet you.

In addition, these companies make money from shareholders. When Google went public back on '04, the net worth of the company soared. And getting back to the first paragraph, the founders of Google make $13 Million dollars a minute (Forbes reported this with their release of their "America's richest people" list.)
