Yes they do. Of course. That is where they got the saying. However, it is a defense mechanism to prevent being eaten for a predator will not eat an animal that acts sick. If the animal drops dead, the predator will think he was diseased before he got there. He is not playing. He is actually not even conscious. In oppossums, when they are terrorized with fear, all the blood rushes away from their head and they actually pass out.

Opossums in fact do play opossum. That's how it got started. Do you think it was just a random coincidence? They play dead to fool predators. I think they can actually also recreate the scent? I'm not sure about that bit though.
