Why is it that humans can make any sound they want and dogs can only go woof?

Answers:
Actually, dogs make quite a variety of sounds, the most human of which is the whine or howl. My dog would copy tones of voice and would sing to me when asked. He had a good musical ear and could sing the note I sang him fairly accurately when I said "Taffy, sing! .. Laaa" but, for some reason, it made him uncomfortable and he would stop playing after a couple of minutes.

They do have rather limited vocal chords but they know how to make different sounds depending on the shape of the mouth and I believe that they do it deliberately, so I think it is communicative. Since they are pack animals, it is likely that they do need to communicate vocally and a bark is just one of the many sounds used.
It might have something to do with the fact that humans have vocal cords.
Dogs can make more sounds then woof.. My dog sure does.. She has several growls.. she has her excited high pitched talk.. she has her wimper. she has her dream noises..

And as far as your previous answerer goes.. geeze.. dogs have vocal cords!! Are you dumb?? Good Grief
dogs can make any sound they like they just dont do it near humans?
Go to Youtube.com and check out, "Talking animals."

I asked my dog about this, and she said that normally they only say 'woof' when there are humans about, so we don't know what they're saying. When they are away from humans they chat about all sorts of things in perfect English ( that's in English speaking countries, of course). Her favourite topic is existentialism.
dogs can also howl besides woofing, and their tone of bark can be different in different circumstances
dogs can do more than just bark, but their sounds are limited compared to human bcoz we have different body structure and hence physical attributes. their vocal cords do not allow them to speak human language but dogs have their own language. all animals have their own set of physical features. humans cannot make any sound they want, there are some extreme high/low pitch sounds that we can never make/hear.
because its a woof world we live in.
My dog would like to say a few things:..

the thing is humans talk way too much, and have evolved a brain that can control the vocal cords, tongue, throat and face muscles in a coordinated matter to allow speech that at the end of the day causes wars.
I woof, whimper whine and howl. I growl, pant and snuffle. Its all i need to say, we do a lot of communication through our noses and body language.

I learned to type so i could email Sir David Attenborough and thank him for the many programmes that have highlighted my species.
