At what age do children generally start reading by themselves?

Answers:
I started reading at around 5 1/2, because I played my sisters hooked on phonics video game. I think the regular is 6-7
I think it varies, but around age 6 is normal.
Istarted at 26 !
usually between 8 and 9, but it varies depending on the childs natural ability, don't be worried if it's later than this, it's no cause for concern.
My son began reading without me telling him to that is in second grade - he is seven

keep in mind girls usually begin this process sooner than boys.
Varies completely from one child to another, based on a)the child's personality and general ability, b)their experiences of books and reading i.e. if you read with your child from when they are very young, they will develop a love of books and want to read.

I've known some 4 years olds who were becoming independent readers, equally there are some children in my Year 5 class now (9/10 years) who are still not independent readers.

Hope this helps!
Usually identifying words between the ages of 4 and 5, then reading sentences at 6 years.
It varies, however, from child to child.
Don't worry if your son/daughter is taking a little longer than his/her peers as he/she might sense this and begin to worry.
Lots of support, different types of texts available and modelling of good reading practice are the key to developing reading.

age 6
Hi,

My now 10 year old son really started enjoying reading since he is 8. We read to him when he was younger before he went to sleep and now he really loves reading. Like his peers he also likes playing online games etc but reading takes a special place in his life, particularly when he goes to bed (just like me ;-)

All the best,

Michiel
I did at 5
There is no standard age for any development.
Personally, I started reading by myself when I was four years old, but other people may be much later.
It all depends for the children that develop fast 5-6 for average kids 7-8 slow kids 8-10
my nephew started 'sight reading' at 2.however, he didn't actually start reading, in terms of what i think you mean until 4.

i started at 4 as did my eldest..it depends on how much access the children have to literature and how much encouragement to read they get.
Varies according to the child. What is important is you reading to them. This sows the seed for them wanting to read, develops their language skills, & gives you time to snuggle down & spend some quiet time with them. Maybe the most important part to a young child. Sometimes we forget to spend enough time with them. Babies we do but school age children really need that time with you. Enjoy. They growup so fast.
It depends on what you mean. I have a 10 year old that reads independently and I have to ask her to read to me somtimes to make sure she is understanding what she is reading. I have an 8 year old that can read to herself but will ask her to read to me or Dad at least 3 times a week as it is important to hear them at that age. Reading is all very well but making sure that they are understanding what they are reading is even more important as just reading words is of no real use at all without comprehension.
6 is the norm
if you read to a child every night then they will pick up earlier than most kids, my daughter started when she was 3, she started memorizing storries, now she's learning how to read and she's 5
My daughter was in year 5 when I stopped doing her reading with her. It's up to you, if you feel your child is confident in reading
then let her/him do it on their own.
What do you mean by reading by themselves? My 4 year old will read odd words by herself but when she has a book she still just looks at the pictures.
However my friends 5 year old will read books by herself all the time. However she is a very advanced reader and has a reading age of about 7 so I assume that the age when they would just pick up a book and read is about 7.
It all depends on how enthusiastic they are about reading. My Dad didn't read anything as a child unless he was made to and is a very slow reader now as a result.
children read at different stages but around the age of 5 when they pick up a few words from school and by the age of eight they are reading fluently
It totally depends on the child. Most children learn what are called "site" words in their Kindergarten and 1st grade years. They learn these words by memorization and are able to read things such as "The cat sat on the mat and looked at the rat." I know that their vocabulary increases every week, and are generally able to start reading by themselves before 2nd grade. They may stumble on words, but mainly can do it. This is not always the case, I know that before I even started school that I was able to read smaller books by myself without being prompted ( I am pretty smart in English) but my younger brother was not able to read a 2ND grade book by himself until about 5Th grade (he is better at math). If you know of a child that has a hard time with reading, he or she could just be having a more difficult time with it, but it does not mean that he or she is learning disabled!
7 or 8
In case of reading I started at 6 but by sister started at 5 so it is varied.
If a child is left to learn naturally it is usually between the ages of 7 and 9. If they are taught using reading schemes at school they may be able to read by 6 but both groups of children will have roughly the same reading ability by 10 - 11.
