Isn't it a pity there is such a prejudice against Media degrees?

Despite the fact that we all spend so much of our lives consuming media, and the further fact that media provision, whether it is the internet, TV, radio, or the press, is changing and developing so rapidly, there seem to be so many people out there who think (for some reason) that a Media degree is not a 'real' degree!

Of course it is not a 'traditional' degree- with a longer view nothing other than theology is! But, for some reason, people with degrees in engineering or architecture or veterinary science, or even literature, think that their degree is- somehow- more 'real'.

The importance, the reality, and the complexity of the subject matter is surely beyond question? And, despite what some people seem to think, there are lots of jobs in it!

I can only conclude it is a mixture of envy and ignorance that leads to the plethora of negative remarks about media degrees! Isn't that sad?

Answers:
I think that there are two or maybe three reasons.

Firstly, there is a perception that course work consists of watching TV, reading the press, using the internet etc, all of which are considered leisure pursuits.

Secondly, even though there are undoubtledly employment prospects at the end of a media degree, it isn't a pre-requesite and hence not necessarily considered as a valuable as say a vetinary science degree which is almost essential to a vetinary career.

Thirdly, the "meedja" are not always held in high esteem by the
public, and so in much the same that an estate agency degree may not carry that much cachet, nor does a media degree.

Just my thoughts on what was a rhetorical question.
have fun being an intern after you graduate or working at starbucks

That degree gives you no marketable skills
no its not sad its perfectly understandable far from envy or ignorance it will of course attract self centered attention seeekers as well as fine upastanding people like you..lol
Gee, sorry . why do you have such a problem with those of us who have TECHNICAL (Science/Math) degrees -- Undergrad and Grad?
Yes, you have certainly learnt how to write and make a good point, and I'm sure you worked very hard to gain your degree, and if you are happy what is the problem? What do you care if we Engineers look down on your degree with disdain. However I'm pretty sure Non of us are jealous of you, who do you think designs and builds everything you work with, from the computer to the Building you work in, you keep writing or reporting it, and we will keep the entire infrastructure that you need, working.
crap degree. No skills you can transfer. waste of taxpayers money, and yours. but you seem to think you deserve the presitgue of stuing a real subject like ECONOMICS!! ARGHHHH!!
Having done a 'media' degree perhaps the answer is because they're full of people trying to avoid being deported or want to claim a living of the Government and it's easier than claiming unemployment! As there are usually few prerequisites for the course i.e. set A' levels. most people can get on.

Before you all shoot me down.. I am talking from personal experience - I have a media degree! This is MY opinion, I am entitled to disagree, just as you all are and. I successfully worked in the media for several channels such as BBC and ITV until I decided to quit!
Envy? I don't think so. The reason that some degrees are more prestigious than others is that it's more difficult to get them. That is, it takes aptitude, intelligence, and hard work. Furthermore, people with the more prestigious degrees wind up making contributions that are widely accepted.

As an exercise, I suggest you try comparing a media studies curriculum (and the actual work required to complete it) against any of the disciplines you mention.
You think that media degrees should be more respected?

You're a guy who has advice about films that show the top of nurses' stockings and you think that Vets, Engineers, and Architects all envy you.
I'm sure it's a very nice degree, but what is its actual PURPOSE? What has it taught you? What good is it going to do for you?
Sorry, but I've always wondered why Anne Robinson loves taking the piss out of it!
People are suspicious of the media in general, so of course they would be suspicious of a degree like yours. It is sad. Because the media is crucial in a democracy, but I don't thin we really have that anymore..
Better to stay quiet and be thought a fool of, than to open your mouth and remove any doubt.
