A better way would be to run an electric current through distilled water.
At the negative terminal (anode) hydrogen gas will form and be released and at the positive terminal (cathode) oxygen gas will be released.
The difficulty comes in actually collecting the gases. If you research electrolysis of water on the net, I'm sure someone has rigged up a homemade apparatus somewhere.
