By your definition it would have to be carist.
A person who plays a piano called also be called a musician, but he's specifically known as a pianist to identify which instrument.
However a race car driver, is a driver but you couldn't specifically say racist as the word is already used for something else.
However you might say Formula 1, or TOCA or stock to identify his speciality.

Racist is an unfortunate American construction. It comes from the equally obnoxious word racism. The English words are racialist and racialism.
The person who drives a motor car is a motorist. The person who races in a motor car is a motor-racer.

And if a person drove a racer car, he/she could be called a racer. or a Driver.
