It depends how long the string is - if it's short it won't be long and if it's long it won't be short. It could also be tied in a knot with another piece of string, in which case you'd have to untie them both to find out which one was which. Then of course, if you cut it in half, it won't be what it was before. Also, it might not be what it seems - it could be a piece of string that has shrunk - now you have to work out if you have to know what it is in length now or before it shrunk. The worst problem though, is if you have a piece of string that is very, very long and you can't see one end from the other - and if you are measuring it - by the time you have got from one end to the other - how do you know someone hasn't gone and cut a bit off the other end !!
