Gower Street in London? What are those funny bumps?
I was walking down Gower street in central London (near Euston Sq tube station) and noticed the pavement has these funny circular raised bumps (pushing up from underneath). some quite big. What are they and where do they come from? There's lots of them.

In the olden days there used to be man-hole covers there where coal and wood were tipped down into cellars below the pavement. Now Health and Safety say they are a danger to people and they have all been filled in. My Gran used to live in Gower Street and we never heard of anyone falling in when the metal covers were off, but in today's "nanny" state and people suing people over the slightest thing maybe it is best to fill in the holes.
