Holes in biscuits, WHY?

Most biscuits in the UK have small holes in the tops, are they for any particular reason or just for a prety pattern?

Answers:
they're there to keep blisters or big empty spaces from forming while the biscuits bake. they give the air contained in the dough a way out when it expands during the baking.

and besides, it keeps the calorie count down, see, the calories leak out via these holes. Plus, it gives the melted butter plenty of surface space so you can put on MORE of it. (Nods solemnly)

think its to do with baking them evenly,
There is no particular reason.
This is to make the packets bigger, making you think that you have got more for your money. By the way, it's not just on biscuits, mints readily come to mind!
To make it easier to grip.

This could be a reason
Holes in biscuits are silly. It's just a waste of space where there could have been more biscuit.
They are the vestigial remains of the hole in the Great Doughnut ancestor.
To put jam in? Ie jammy dodgers, jam rings ect
polos have holes in them so if they get stuck and you choke on them you don't suffocate because air can still get into your lungs via the hole. Guess biscuits are the same but for people with bigger mouths?
