Why do people in britain eat likely the same amount of food as we in america but are not over weight like us?

is it the volume or wrong diet that we eat here in america that makes us super sizes or our body mechanisms that does not process the food properly . we get sick of seeing our sizes , what is wrong and what can we do to look like other people in the world?

Answers:
I once saw a programme about a hugely overweight American and he never cooked. All he did was go around the diners with all their offers, eg., eat X amount and get X amount free, or building up loyalty points for free meals another time, and so on. It was cheaper for him to eat every meal out.Is that not a lot of the thinking with eating out in America? Plus, isn't eating out more a part of the culture? I have never been to America but those that I know have been say the portions are huge compared to here, and we think we get good portions!

But then - you have super slim people so it must be possible!

At the end of the day everyone is alike - it's down to attitude, healthy eating and moderation, will power and exercise.
Coz we don't sit on our backsides all the time.
because were lazy
Even when they eat the same amount of food, much of that is "black puddin" that makes them barf after a while, so they stay slim that way.
Because you like all your food fried, super sized, battered and covered in Ketchup.
We probably do eat as much as you but we eat healthier.
We are quickly catching you up on the obesity count though.
because we know how to cook with real ingredients like vegetables and don't eat processed shite all the time.
they dont use fatty oils such as we do..

their cooking methods are healthier..
You are what you eat!
Generally, Americans eat a lot of fast food, not to mention the huge breakfasts!
Britain is full of farms, and therefore, more fresh produce? (just a guess)
Portions of food in America are massive compared to here in England. When i visited me and my friend couldn't even eat half a meal that was meant for just 1 person. Eating less food, eating more healthily and exercising more are the ways people will get smaller.
we are not the healthiest either, I guess one difference is that fast food here is mainly only in major towns and cities and opening times are less, the USA is way larger than UK too, so you need to take that into account when looking at stats.. I guess we are perhaps a little more food conscious, but it is very much a western problem.

our portions are less, and we dont deep fry as much?
We do not eat half the amount of food you do, have you seen the size of your portions when you go to a restaurant, one of your portions would feed a family of four here. No you definatley eat tooooo much, also Americans don't walk anywhere, we walk all the time, walk for a newspaper walk the dogs, take the kids for walks.
I doubt that, your premise is wrong. I travel extensively and I have found the quantity of food eaten by americans much more than the british. Its obvious from just seeing the helpings at a restaurant. I visited The Hard Rock cafe in Madrid, when I ordered the meal I was asked if I wanted an American size helping or a european. I asked whats the difference. I was told that the american starter was the size of a european main course.
THEY EAT THE SAME AMOUNT BUT NOT FRIED.
We watch less tv on average (perhaps the most inactive activity possible). And we eat a lower proportion of fast food (perhaps the least nutrious way of eating).
The last time I went to the States and stayed in a hotel for a week, I put on 4lb in a week - and that was generally asking for smaller portions in restaurants. Your guys' portion control is way excessive even by my standards.and I have a pretty big appetite! We have friends in Canada who come over to stay pretty often, and they always remark on how frugal our restaurants are with portions. They are also disappointed with the size of meals in universal fast food restaurants. For instance, our largest available size soft drink in McD is apparently your smallest in North America, and our Canadian friend will get through at least 3 large colas in a sitting -that's an awful lot of sugar! By the way, these friends consider themselves healthy eaters by their Canadian counterparts standards, yet I struggle to fill them up when they stay over!

So no, I wouldn't agree that the average American eats the same amount as the average European.
Probably cos we exercise ..also everyone in the US drives cos it's so big even to the local shops it requires a car journey

But saying that the UK/Europe is fast approaching the US obesity rates thks to .,junk food ,,daytime tv,games consoles..lack of excercise..
There is a huge problem with obesity in GB too, but in my time in the US working I've met people who revel in their size and take pride in their utter laziness in a way I never have in England so perhaps it's down to attitude, Americans are more at ease with letting it all hang out and not fearing criticism.
if I ever walked anywhere in the US I got stopped and offered a lift as they couldn't believe anyone would do that! every time!
The food its basically the same. It's the beer that we have with the foods that makes the diference.
I agree with the first answer! lol
Your all right,, food cooked in oils/fats.
fast foods,,
to much of everything,,
not enough exercise,,
sauces,,
not enough exercise,,
snacks, etc,, the list goes on and on,,
we walk or exercise to lose the weight
i think even thou we eat stacks its not all junk and our portions are def a lot smaller that those in the us. ive been to the us 3x now and have never managed to clear my plate or fit in a pudding after. thou am determind to when i go nxt as the look scrummy. gotta say thou cant get my head round jelly for breakfast like they serve at ponderosa
we also excersise more in the uk walking places rather than driving everywhere.
In Britain our portions are half the size of American ones,
Those massive fizzy drinks that you get from the fast food places are full of calories your body doesn't need, and those mega lattes are tons of full fat milk. Plus walking is a good idea from time to time. Leave the car where it is! Climing stairs instead of lifts and Elevators.
Could b soomething to do with the fact that we dont have super size!
As a general rule (remember - Brits are getting fatter too!) we don't drive to our neighbours, towns and shopping centres have provisions for pedestrians and people tend to walk between shops.

Of course it could be that meats over here tend not to be pumped full of growth hormones, we still have a fondness of real fresh fruit and veg and spicey food really is spicey, doesn't half get your metabolism working!
I have been in USA many times ( On merchant ships ) Love it.
I found that when I ordered a meal it would have done 3 people.
Even ordering a child's portion seemed too much.
So perhaps its the QUANTITY.
Look up Sonya Thomas. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/sonya_thoma.

That'll add a few more questions for you.
I've lived in the US and UK. I have a couple observations.
In the US, more people tend to work out, but. in the UK more people tend to build walking into their everyday habit.

Also almost every restaurant in the US offers large sodas with free refills. In the UK you get small 8 oz cokes. Want another one? Pay for it. Alot of Americans who come over here and want the typical amount they're used to end up buying a double sized serving in a pint glass and pay seven or eight bucks for it!
UK is catching up fast with the food habits. Can't you export some useful things for a change?

The other main reason is that people in the US like things to be "facilitated".

So, no exercise walking to the local shops (easier to take the SUV), electric windows on cars (no exercise winding it manually), buy supersize hamburgers (instead of spending the effort in cooking) etc. UK is catching up on this too.
My perception is that British people generally dont 'love' food as much as Americans (in general) causing less food consumption, not aware of pork being popular there (I think it causes obesity), fish and chips I think are popular there and fish is much less going to cause weight gain, buses are more popular as transportation so you've got to walk from your house to the bus stop instead of from house to garage or driveway. Also with the water all around I think the higher oxygen content in the air there could have something to do with it. I could be wrong but I have the idea that employers there would see it as less weird for a person to go outside to eat his or her lunch--here they want to keep track of where you are more closely
because the USA invented the fast food life style, and are a few years ahead of us that is why your so over weight, but don't worry you have sent the crap over here and we are catching you up at a very fast rate. cheers from a worried parent
