Are free range eggs sold in supermarkets really free range?

Free range eggs direct from farms appear to be far better.

Answers:
Carefully read what it says on the box. Beware of things like "The hens from which these eggs came had access to outside conditions" (or similar) because this can simply mean that they were shown what a field of grass looks like through the open doors of the barn or coop they were in.
I would think so otherwise I dont think they would get away with it these days.
One never knows for sure, does one?
fresh from the farm is hard to beat eg eggs, apples, strawberries etc
check description Free Range my be free range, but there are confusing ohter names
if it says they are free range then they are, and the reasons that eggs sold directly from farms are better is that they didn't take as long to get to you, the buyer. They might also cut costs in the food that they give the the chickens in mass production, so feed them cheaper than in other farms, making the food in other farms better quality.
If they weren't then trading standards would have a field day. Field day. hunting the chickens. Never mind. I'll keep taking the pills.
They have to be legally, otherwise the shop is in real trouble
Don't know, I buy REAL free range eggs not from supermarkets.
They are not free range. They are expensive range.
I don't think so it is posible
I don't really think that any of the major stores would risk prosecution under the Sale of Goods Act which would almost certainly result from misleading the public in that way.
we have no way of telling do we so we have to accept what they say
