Lager VS Bitter/Ale?

Which is better? Does Larger taste like Nats Hiss? Is there more flavour in Bitter? Or is Bitter/Ale some horrible tasting old mans drink? Those from outside of England and the rest of the UK are welcome to comment as well!

Bitter lad. Timmy Taylors Landlord.
I'm from Yorkshire, I'm 29 years old and am a regular bitter drinker. However, in the hot summer months I switch to lager or cider, as bitter can lay a little heavy.
I prefer real beers/ales/bitters, none of that chemical c**p lager.
if its a hot day (like today) a nice cold pint of larger is king, however i prefer a pint of bitter normally
I love John Smiths, Bottingtons, Worthingtons etc. They are much tastier than a pint of pissy lager and not gassy.
give me a pint of cider anyday, or even guiness is nicer than lager, bitter/ale is a old mans drink
i prefer lager
why do ya wanna buy me one?
I'll always go for a decent Bitter if the pub has one, but if its just Tetley or John Smiths, which happens a lot, I'll go for a lager, Gunness or cider insted
First off. I'm from America. and I love your use of the 'u' in flavour. I think that Americans should once again adopt the 'u' in words like colour, flavour, honour .. it's great.

Second, I enjoy a nice Lager over an ale. It's thicker and I think has better flavor. It's more enjoyable really. Usually, Ales are reserved for those who are older and have burnt up their taste buds. They can no longer taste the flavour of the Lagers, so they have to switch to the Ales in order to actually taste them.
Ale in the winter, lager in the summer. Ale certainly has more flavour.
Here are my favs:

proper lager as made in Germany Czezh is probably the best drink in the world -
american beer is very poor avoid at all costs
spanish is ok - try Estrella Galicia

Red Wine - only ever drink Ribero del Duero
White wine - anything passes as long as its cold - its is impossible to get a hangover from white wine.

Pimms is typified as a Posh drink but is wonderful

thats me - except for one thing - Never Drink & Drive.
You cant beat a good ale to relax to, if you want a single sensible drink. You cant beat a bitter down the pub as its cheaper, has a good taste and seems to get me drunk quicker (even with lower alcohol percentage). Lager is just expensive piss. whats the point of it!?

However my northen friends would disagree. i wonder if there is a north/south divide on the matter?
Depends what mood I am in!

I do like Grolsch ! and like to sample real ales too Thomas Hardy is wicked its about 12% so they serve it by the half pint!! There are some superb real ales out there from smaller independant breweries that are well worth trying. GO FOR IT!
It all depends on what you like. I'm from the U.S. and don't drink the mass-produced American beers like Miller or Budweiser or Coors because they taste like watered-down p!$$. American micro-brews have made American beer palatable, but English and Irish beer are my favorites, preferred over German or Belgian beer. My favorite beer is Guinness Extra Stout (I know; WAY too strong and bitter for most people), but I'm also a big fan of Newcastle Brown Ale, Bass Pale Ale, and Harp Lager. All very different tastes. Just depends on what I feel like drinking that day. Ale isn't some horrible-tasting old man's drink IMHO, and lager doesn't taste like p!$$, but I prefer lager on hot days because it's lighter than ale or stout. Haven't had a chance to try true British Bitter.probably have to visit England to do that.
John Smiths Smooth, chilled is all you will ever need. Lager is like big boys pop. Lager louts are everywhere because they can't holdtheir drink. You never hear of Bitter louts do you? Bitter is the mans drink.
Stella on draught for me, if I'm drinking at home then cans of Budweiser. I like a nice ale, McEwans Export is lovely.

But if it's summer time then it has to be lager.
greetings from the states.

i find that a nice ale is best in the summer months. although i've never been one to turn my nose up at a lager, either! stouts and porters are tasty as well.

that wasn't very helpful, was it?

by the way, it's my opinion that the world's best beers are made in britain. cheers.

BOY."GARWY" SURE HAS A BUG UP HIS A S S, DOESN'T HE??!!??
Real Ale's.

Non of that commercial rubbish!

If its really hot weather then I find German ales the best as they contain less chmicals.
this is about as silly as the 'do you like cheese or fish' question.

there are excellent lagers (staropramen, pilsener urquell, cuvée de nantes) and there are virtually undrinkable ones (nastro azzuro, grolsch, budweiser, heineken).

there are at least as many first class ales (brakespear triple, theakston's old peculier, tomos watcyn cwrw haf) and even more which taste better coming up than they do going down (albright, tetley, worthingtons).

the distinction summer / lager, winter / ale makes absolutely no sense when you consider that before lager ever featured on the uk market (it was a drink for theatrical poseurs exclusively before the mid 1970s) we drank stouts and milds in the winter with ipa for a summer drink.

basically the less you know about beer the easier you will find this question to answer. the more you know about beer the better you will realise that the difference between a good beer and a poor beer is immeasurable, the difference between a poor beer and another poor beer is simply not worth talking about.

though from the overall quality of responses so far i can see that there are a whole lot of blind men around here who have a favourite painter.
do you think it is cool to drink alcohol, well it is not, it just damages your body, so just stop it!!
STOUT
Pansies like Ronaldo drink lager....
i much prefer real ales n they are a lot better for you but when it's really hot cider/scrumpy or bottled lager
