Did you know that?.?
Most tablets from the doctors aren't vegetarian or vegan? After speaking to the vegetarian soceity about this they aren't trying to do anything about this because they don't want to take on the drug companies! As a vegetarian myself I was shocked that they don't appear to be that bothered. What do you think?
Answers:
I think thats awful
I am a veg too and will contact drug companies and complain about it.
a little stero typing huh
uh. appalling! and what do we do? I have to take my meds! This is terrible!
Did you ask your doctor or pharmacist to see if there is a vegetarian substitute? Once my wholistic chiropractor gave me a B supplement to help with stress. It had a whole bunch of nasty stuff, cow spleen & liver. Gross! I asked for something that wasn't so nasty and they had a completely vegetarian substitute that was made from plant stuff instead of animal stuff.
i dont think a lot of people realise this.
OMG!! I'm a vegeterian too!! its unbelievable that they don't care!!
Very few organisations in the world are prepared to take on the drug companies. I'm not a vegetarian, but I can appreciate that you don't want to violate your principles. I'm not sure which components of patent medicines come from animal products, but I wish you luck with your campaign.
Why don't you turn to natural remedies? There are lots of vegetarian and vegan friendly remedies. There is more things that are wrong with mainstream medication than not being vegan..
YEah it sucks. When having an ailment it's hard to find good synthetic cures or even "plant based" cures which are free from animal products.
On this very day(oct 4 I wrote this in my journal:
Mr. Doctor,
"I do not want to eat pills which contain animal products. I also do not wish to take pills from a pharmaceutuical company which involuntarilly experiments on animals."(I would rather DIE or suffer with my pain if there are no other options)

I think that some "health-care" professionals DO CARE but others just seem to NOT CARE. and well it goes along with the person knowing that veganism is the way or not.
its wrong as a member of peta I fully agree with you if we dont step up to protect are animals who will ?
Yep i knew that, yeah it sucks. i have had a lot of tablets prescribed for back pain and its a nightmare!
yes i knew this which is why i use alternative therapies, i think it's better than putting lots of chemicals into my body anyway, but i do agree with you, it is wrong but if medication was to be made ok for veggies and vegans it would only be the ingredients that would be altered, the medication would still have been tested on animals and i personally don't agree with any kind of animal testing
hmm.. so I guess the next time you need some pills, you aren't going to take them then huh? We just need to face it. animals were put on this earth for men. if it is necessary to use some type of animal to save lives, then I don't see what the problem is.
They probably are bothered, but the Veg Soc UK is a charity and does not have the funds to take on the drug companies.if you are that concerned start doing something yourself and stop slagging off what is basically an extremely good society.
That is one of many reasons I do not take medications. I have several books on natural healing, and have learned that most chronic illnesses and diseases that would have most Americans popping pills every day for life- can be controlled by diet changes. My son used to be on his nebulizer 8 times a day, but when we took dairy out of his diet, he diesn't even need an inhaler. Most medications today are designed to hide the symptoms. Taking a Tylenol when you have a fever only gets rid of the fever- not the problem that caused the fever. And stopping the fever can slow the body's process of healing itself. Most things can be cured with warm baths, long naps, and a healthy diet. Look into it. It's one of the million things the FDA would rather we didn't know.
I don't blame them for not wanting to take on the big pharmaceutical companies; most organizations lack the funds and the political clout to do so. As vegetarians we need to be our own consumer watchdogs. Yes, gelatin is used to bind most vitamins, so I found a vegetarian formulation that gets none of its nutrients from animal sources and uses no animal byproducts in the tablets. When I started wearing contacts I went to the optometrist to get papaya enzymes rather than use the commercially available brands, which are made from pork. It's a pain, but it's my choice so it's my responsibility.
Animals were put on this earth for men? What kind of quasi-religious nonsense is that?
If the life of the earth were seen as one year, with the earth formed at midnight on Jan 1st, then life appeared on the earth around Feb 24th. Dinosaurs appeared in July and lasted for 14 days. Humans first appeared in the evening of the 31st of December.
So I think it was the other way around. humans were put on the earth for animals (not even going to the fact that humans ARE animals.. we are just one of the largest and certainly THE most vicious of the anthropoids)
So to find (getting back to the question) that drug companies have still not given the issue of what their stuff is made from much thought doesn't surprise me. Anyone here remember Thalidomide? Or the recent 'drugs-trial' tests that went horribly wrong? They really don't have that much of a clue or a care about what they are doing, or how they do it. it is just about making more money than anyone else!
If you then expect the veg soc to take them on with limited resources.. won't happen.
HOWEVER. you seem to have make a start on a campaign on here. so start it up! Make it happen! REmember the 'McDonald's Two'??
With a will you can move mountains!
OMG! What should I do when I need to take medicine!?
Its not a shock that they are dead-cow covered. It says so in the ingredients list and, as a veggie, you should be checking every processed product you eat.
Why would it not have dead animals in it, 95% of stuff does ?
There are now some alternatives that have sugar coating. But as this is refined sugar its not veggie either.
I'm suprised at the veggie soc. Just because you can't win an arguement doesn't mean you should state your stance.
Did they say "they dissaprove, but won't start a campaign". Or did they say "they don't care" ?
Yeah you always need to check the tablets, some of them (especially capsule looking things with the "shells") have gelatin in them. There are vegan/veggie tablets too, you just have to check.
I personally don't think that the doctors give a .. whether you want veggie or not tablets. I'm sure they aren't aware of which ones are gelatine free and I wouldn't be suprised if they just blagged their way through it when questioned.
Always read all labels, it's insane when you start finding out where they shove and what..
OMG NO I DID'NT I MAY GO BACK TO MY DOC OH THANK YOU
Such is life.
yeah most of them have gelatine in them. they could use veggie gelatine.
You have the right to refuse medication but you have to decide which is better. A life with the chance to make you feelings known or ill health and maybe no chance at all.
I take medication only when I have to and try alternatives when they are available but many people go to the doctor and feel cheated if they do not come out with a prescription for pills!
If all that was wrong with allopatic medicine was that they were using non-vegan pills I would jump for joy. I don't take meds personally, but I realize there are people who have to (much less than many think.) For those people ask your doctor hopefully s/he has something.
Try reporting this to an organization like www.PCRM.org. I'm sure they are well aware but if people are interested than they may take action.
