Why do people judge a wine by the 'dint' in the bottom of the bottle?
What is they 'dint' anyway?
Answers:
*****The punt as a historical artifact
-They are an historical remnant of old-fashioned glass-blowing techniques
-They once had the function of making the bottle less likely to topple over. A bottle designed with a flat bottom only needs a small imperfection to make it unstable. In the past, it may have been safer to give the bottle a dimple to allow for a margin of error
-They once had (and may still have) the function of strengthening the bottle, particularly useful in the case of sparkling wine
****The punt as having a function
-Sediment deposits at the bottom or side of the bottle (depending on how the wine was stored), which the punt can help to consolidate
-They allow bottles of sparkling wine to be turned upside-down and then stacked (depending on their shape)
-They can make the bottle look bigger
-They lessen the chance for breaking bottles when cases are stacked on top of one another
-They allow one to pour the wine with class and dramatic emphasis with the thumb in the punt and the fingers on the outside.
**** Fun Fact
The producers of Cristal moved to a flat bottom bottle because the Russian Czar was afraid enemies would hide explosives in the punt.
The'dint' is where the sediment is collected. It has nothing to do with how good the wine is!
if you drink it, and see the dint through the neck within a short space of time, it must be good
I didn't know they did judge wine that way, i don't.
The dint is for 4 reasons
1 - to ensure the sediment has a lower surface area and does not impair the taste
2 - to strenghten the glass by not having a flat base
3 - its easier to make it that way
4 - it provides a good topic of conversation
Personally, i just drink the stuff, picture are make for looking at, not wine ;-)
The dint is for your Thumb when you pour it!
didn't know wine was judged that way, thought it was judged by the province it came from,,
