give him a normal cookery book, but ask him not to get over-ambitious when he's starting out.
I hate to admit this, but I only found out that my mother couldn't cook after I left home and had to fend for myself - now married women friends invite me over to their place and ply me with alcohol just for doing simple things like roast chicken.

I found a cookery book for children in The Book People magazine and they have another 3 on their website.
If he is into cooking already then a basic adult cookery book might suit him better but if he's not so keen and wants to try it out The Book People have really cheap options for an introduction.
