The DS if fine for your daughter. The battery issues has been addressed.

I also have a tip for you with regards to games the DS takes 2 different games cartridges. The DS games go for £20-£30 but you can buy preowned games for nearly half the price. Once my daughter has completed her games we go to the game shop and exchange for a preowned one. With regards to the other game cartridge you can use Game Boy Advance SP games that go in the the bottom of the DS. There are more age appropriate games available for your daughter on Game Boy Advance SP.

You can also purchase games from eBay preowned and new.

I hope you daughter enjoys her new gadget.
you dont need extra batteries, they are chargable batteries. yes they are great and suitable for 6 year olds. rather than a psp. get it, good idea.
They are indeed suitable for a 6 year old and they will do a great job of keeping her entertained on flights.
The batteries are sealed in the DS so you arent able to get an extra set although some third party companies may do and additional pack that connects to the system to extend its life span.
the batteries last pretty well anyway to be honest around 10hrs i reckon so that should be sufficient as i cant imagine they will want to play all the time.

i hope they have lots of fun with it.
That depends on your opinion on video games and kids and what kind of games you allow her to play on them. In my opinion too much TV and video games is not at all good for the young child and I only allow my daughter limited time on these things, obviously there needs to be balance as you don't want to entirely alienate them from technology either! Just be careful that if you buy it for long journeys that you stick to your aim and keep it for that purpose otherwise I think you might find it will be demanded every day and your daughter will spend less and less time on imaginative play which is essential for her development.
If you are interested there is an interesting article on the BBC website linking precocious puberty to being over exposed to TV and video games which affects the hormone balance in the body, you can go to the page and type TV and puberty into the search engine and you'll find it.
Kind regards.
video games are fantastic at keeping young & old minds busy whilst flying . most airlines are not letting people take on batteries & battery powered games on to planes because they could be used to detinate an explosive device.
