It would be useful to be able to speak to a professional author to be able to give me some guidance on how the book should be laid out & some common skills i need to be aware of - I have been on a book writing course but what i need is a one to one - i have limited funds but i just need to see what options i have

Well, it depends on how serious you want this. I also would like to write my own book. I have the imagination and the creativity, but its about channeling those talents into something a publisher would be interested in. What I have done is enrolled on a creativity writing course with the open university. Its a short course, and is in five stages - and the final stage is a module all about getting your stories out there in the market, worth a go i think.
pick up a pen and paper and for the love of god save the aliens..
I am a retied engineer with two PhD's. During my working years I wrote thousands of engineering an technical papers, many of which were published in engineering and technical journals and magazines.

While in college and grad school, I took a handful of technical and creative writing courses. I studied with such noted authors as James Dickey and Rod Serling.

After retiring, I decided to try my hand at creative writing. Thus far I have written two cook books, twenty-four short stories, two novels and am currently working on the sequel to one of the novels.

I have yet to find a publisher or agent who is interested in anything I have written. I know my stories are good. A few are damned good, but I have yet to make one sale.

So, as you can see, credentials and talent seem to have little bearing on getting published. It's apparently more a matter of luck, and who you know.

I don't mean to dampen your enthusiasm, but getting published is difficult. However, I would be glad to help you in any way I can. I'm a good editor, with lots of practice. and I have a wealth of experience.

All my stuff is copyrighted, so I would have no problem sending you some of my stories for you to read. You could get an idea of how a piece of work is laid out for presentation to a publisher. Also, if you would like, I could advise you about your work, and perhaps offer some creative criticism.
