I'd like to get a game console for my daughter aged 9yrs. What would be best suited to her?

I don't want something that will be too advanced for her. We've had a ps2 that has gone wrong after 18 months!!!

Answers:
I'd go with something nintendo, such as a gamecube, ds, or gameboy advance. Anything other than that and the games will get harder and the ratings will get more mature.
I would say a Nintendo Gamecube.
PSP.then she can take it with her on car journeys, holiday..sit in the sitting room with the family whilst playing it. With the PS2, X Box etc they're cooped up in their room..and you don't see them for days!!
one that u can afford
When I was 9, I got my first Nintendo, quite a step up from the Commador 64. I am going to be a terrible grampa, " I just had an 8 bit Nintendo, but we liked it that way. You never heard me complain." That's what my kids and grand kids will play, anything else "new fangled" they can go get a job and earn it like we had to when we were kids in 4 feet or snow half naked with our noses bleeding. And dammit, we liked it just fine that way.
i say dont get her one children should be outside playing in the fresh air (supervised of course) not sitting glued to a box turning into fat couch potatoes
I would say that you should probably get a GameCube or one of the older consoles. GameCube has many games for younger ages to play and is like a little tank, It will last a long time.

Or, If you dont want to spend lots of money on the GC, Buy a Nintendo or Atari. You could also always get a GameBoy. Portable games are fun on road trips aswell.
She's 9 years old for goodness sake.. does she really need a games console? Why don't you buy her something that will enable her to use her imagination or allow her to outside to go and have fun, rather than something that is going to make her sit in front of the TV, not blinking, mouth half open and stunt her conversation and development skills.

Be her mother, not her best mate.

Sorry, I actually don't mean to offend this time (I do normally, but not this time).
I have 2 girls 4 & 7 they both have leapfrog "leapsters"
they have a pretty big selection of games! and it's mobile!
check the leapfrog website to see if the game variety is the same for 9.
My oldest just got a GAMEBOY DS" VERY COOL"
It's a little bit advanced for her so it would probably be perfect for age 9.
PSP my little bro has got 1 he is 9 too and he loves it because you can do so much with it!
you should get her a gameboy advance as they aren't as expensive as other portable games consoles and there are more games suitable for her age available for it, and the advantage of a portable one is that she can take it on holidays and things in case there is a rainy day.
well actually playing on game consoles helps a childs refelexes a lot. recent studies show that children who play game consoles are: less naive, faster refelexes, have better sense stimulation and have better concentration at school. so although ur last ps2 broke quickly like mine,! get a psp because children of today are more advanced than ever!
Sorry to be on a "Downer"
But what has happened to the art of being a kid and having fun with their mates? Playing games like Tag or something. Simple things in life?
Time enough for consoles when they are older (If they want them)
I've seen kids around here who have lost that innocence. They behave like morons! Not saying all are like that, but many are.
Part of the problem is that many parents sit their children in front of a TV or something and forget to do the simple things that make life so wonderful!
LOL
my son is 7 we have had playstaton and xbox and nintindo game cube

Nintindo is the best for kids they have the most kid oriented games alot of them are made by nintindo so can you can not get those games for the other consoles
PSP is good because you can take it out with you and charge it up at home or if thats too pricey than you shoud get her a gameboy advance. dont forget you have to buy the games sepetately
i would wait until the nintendo wii comes out. they say it is good for all ages and it will be low price. also it has more of a kid selection of games.
maybe a pink nintendo ds and some sports games
