Is it a good idea to get my ps2 chipped?
Answers:
If you chipped your PS2, you'll lose your manufacturer's warranty. If the person mess up when mod the chip, you'll also get screwed. The reason that you can't play the DVD that you bought from eBay is that these DVDs either copies or made for overseas. If you bought you PS2 from the first batch, you maybe eligible for a free repair through Sony. There was a problem with their first batch of PS2, they will fix the laser lens for free. Check out their website. On the other hand, if you chipped your PS2 correctly, you'll be able to play almost all the games, US and overseas.
go for it it wont do any damage and odds are the people who mod it will give you a warranty
its actualy pretty easy to mod one and the chips are properly tested
i wouldn't if it breaks then the guarentee is null and void and for what you would pay to get it chipped you could buy a cheap DVD player it's not worth it :)
NO DO NOT GET YOUR PS2 CHIPPED
I fix ps2's and therefore I know what chipping a ps2 does to the console. It seriously shortens the ps2's life leads to disk read errors and power failure.
I presume the dvd's are NTSC format instead of PAL so therefore the checker system in your ps2 will detect that the dvd's are imported and refuse to play them. There are 3 other options besides getting it chipped in order to play NTSC dvd's.
Option 1: Buy DVD Region X Import DVD movie player. If you are only interested in it playing import dvd's this is your best option.
Option 2: Buy a piece of software called swap magic slide tool. This will also enable import and backup games to play on your ps2. You will have to do a peice of very minor modification to the ps2 but it does not involve opening the ps2 up so it will not void your warranty. Full instructions for the modification are provided with the software.
Option 3: Buy an American NTSC ps2 with an american power lead and step down converter- which is compulsory as you dont need a degree in electronic engineering to figure out if you pump 240 volts through a machine that runs off 110 it will blow up - litrally
Make sure your TV supports 60 hz otherwise they will be in black and white. If it supports 60 hz PAL but not NTSC then you will need an NTSC to PAL converter in order to make it in colour. If it will not support 60 hz at all then your picture will be in black and white no matter which option you choose. Its not too bad when you are playing Pong or watching a black and white film but bad if you are watching a colour one.
All of those 3 options are better than getting it chipped.
