If my x box 360 plays games in hd why will i have to buy a add on dvd player to watch movies in hd?

Answers:
The XBOX360 allows you to play games in HD. Games do not take up much space on normal DVDs thus it is possible to fit high definition games on a normal type of DVD.

HD DVD uses the same formatting, but movies take up ALOT more space than a game. A movie fits just nicely on a normal DVD, thus HD DVD was developed to be shown on larger screens with better quality and higher detail.
The actual HD is not the problem. HD can fit on normal DVDs and even CDs, however the space is strictly limited.

HD DVDs are DVDs that are not actually HD, putting things onto it will not automatically make them high def. The HD was added because it can store the excessively large files that movies come in, not possible to store on DVDs.
The reading laser is also different because it has to read finer dots on the disk.

The extra add on was not out of cruelty but kindness. Microsoft knows that HD DVD will not take off immediately and sold their XBOX360s with a standard DVD drive. The DVD content and the processing power is what makes the games HD, not the disk itself.
If the XBOX360 was sold with a HD DVD drive, it would not come out until the end of this year, and it would have a very high price tag. They then launced the HD DVD external drive so as to allow the HD processing power of the console to show the HD DVDs in actual quality. Thus making a very cheap way of bringing HD DVD into your home.
Playstation3 is the opposite. They force BluRay upon its users, even though it is not actually needed. Game will also cost MUCH more because its a new technology. Most of the disk will be unoccupied by content and thus would be making you pay for things you don't need.

In conclusion, the XBOX360 has HD processing powers, but it lacks the HD DVD reading laser in its disk drive. Thus you need to buy the external HD DVD drive to be able to read HD DVDs.
Amazingly enough, Microsoft's XBOX team actually cares for its gamers! This is also seen in MANY other ways, of which details shall not be posted here because they are off topic. (email me for more info if you want)

Also, Microsoft will be launching HD DVD enabled XBOX360s early 2007, with the HD DVD drive built in.
Cosmetic changes, and the option to bring in your normal XBOX360 to swap the drives are unknown at the moment.

Hope this answers your question :)
because they want to make as much money out of you as they can, and if you only had to buy one once it would not satisfiy their lust for money.
