The only way to preserve the smell is putting them in sealed bags. I sell a lot on ebay and things I am selling, seal in plastic with a dryer sheet. They smell so good after weeks. Try it. Air is what is taking the smell away. Take it out of the equation and BAM! Fresh clothes.
i find that the same with my clothes too-i use the same kind and also mountain (something or another) the only way i can get a fresh scent to stay on my clothes is if i layer my fragrances (shower gel, lotion and body spray) with all the same scent.
Try putting a moist one in a snack bag but don't zip it all the way and put it in a pocket of the clothes or pin it on the hanger close to the garmet. Good Luck!

Try hanging the dryer sheet on the hangers with your cloths, not just putting them in the closet! It worked great with my favorite sweater!

sachets are little scented packets meant to go in between articles of clothing while they are stored in dressers. You can find them at any respectable department store, near the candles and potpourri section.
you can't really preserve the smell of fresh laundry, but there are "fresh laundry" scented sachets for purchase.
Or you could get one of those car fresheners, the "little trees", in "vanillaroma".and use it for a sachet.
