I hear a rumor that if you put white wine on it you can remove a red wine stain or if you put selzter water on the stain and clean it that way. However, there are better ways. I think Clean Shot is the best method and is available through any drugstore like CVS

Wine - Stain Removal on Carpet and Upholstery
1. Mix one teaspoon of a neutral detergent (a mild detergent containing no alkalies or bleaches) with a cup of luke-warm water. Blot.
2. Mix one-third cup of white household vinegar with two-thirds cup of water. Blot.
3. Repeat step one.
4. Sponge with clean water. Blot.

If the stain has dried already, wet it with water thoroughly, and then apply salt to the stain. The salt will absorb the color. Then give it time to dry (all the way) and vaccuum up the salt. If it a set in stain, several applications may be needed, but it's always worked for me. And not just with wine either.koolaid, soda, grape juice! Anything liquid.
Use Club Soda. Put it on the stain and blot, blot, and blot until it comes out! Do NOT rub, that will set the stain, blot instead! The carbonation will pull the stain up and the salt in it will keep it from staining.
White wine neutralizes red wine, but I think this works better when it's a newer stain. Next time also, when it first happens, throw some salt on it, this will keep it from staining until you can get to it to clean.
