A spider with red and yellow legs?
My children have just come back from Dorset, UK, where they saw a spider on their campsite which was quite large and had red and yellow striped legs. Does anyone know what type of spider this was?

I hate bugs so much but i feel better if i can identify them. I found this great website that has helped me. They have pictures upon pictures of so many species of bugs. I always get the willies looking at them but it is really informative.
Good luck!
Hope you have checked their luggage really, really carefully!

If it was fairly large but pretty slender, it was probably a woodlouse spider. But they have black bodies and white abdomens. It could have also been a type of orb-weaveing spider. They can tend to get very colorful. Google them both and see what you get.
Micky K, great picture. I like taking photos of wee beasties especially garden spiders, what's the website you got the pic from, it's a good clear shot.
unless you have a photo of this beast then i cant be too sure but i think it may be harmless as we in the uk get many variations of spider that are rather large with all sorts of patterns on them unless it was the size of your hand and hairyer than the top of my head (a football is also hairyer than the top of my head i bet ya didnt know that did ya) in wich case its a stow away from afar and may if hungry eat a bird
red and yellow legs i've lived in the UK and have neither seen nor heard of such spiders. But seeing it was Dorset the spider in question could have been a Morris Dancer, hence the striped colouring.
And if it was in the autumn or winter suckaslug's answer aabout it wearing socks is probably true
