Broken Tomato plant ...?
Some one has cracked the stem of my largest tomato plant. I have been told they will root as far up the stem as you place the soil. My question is if I place the end in soil can I save the plant.

Is the stem completely severed? If it is you probably won't be able to save it, but if it is just bent or cracked you may still be ok..if the injury is low enough just mound up dirt around the cracked spot, some folks recommend scotch tape but I think that's a waste of time.you will have to do some extra propping of the heavier branches as the main stem will provide little or no support now, but if moisture can still flow through the stem, the plant will most likely survive, tomatoes are quite resilient.

I'm not sure but tomato plants are pretty tough. There's no harm in trying right? Also, don't throw out the base, that'll certainly sprout new shoots and they'll eventually give tomatoes, albeit later in the year.

no in order to save the plant you are going to have to put the prt that got broken off into a glass of water so it will root and only then can it be replaced into the soil
It should repair itself, I do not know how cracked it is but try wrapping with some cheese cloth an allow the plant to heal itself,
Probably not if it has completely snapped off, the roots won't grow fast enough to save the plant.
It could have been the wind; it twists them round and they can snap. Its true about the extra roots, I grow mine in old compost bags and backfill as they grow.

hello if you plant the piece that has snapped it will not grow back you will notice it will die, its a shame that happened but better protect them by putting canes all around them this way no one or the wind can damage them
Absolutely. I just broke one last week and put it in the soil and it's growing great.

if not dig up plant and bury past the crack,
and restake and water well ,
four weeks time you should have new growth . try sellotape around crack i do not know if you are growing tomatoes in a greenhouse or in a growbag
if in a greenhouse tie string and hang down and bury with plant as plant grows wrap string around

It just may do if you are quick. Although new roots might not sprout in time to save it. It's worth a try though, you have nothing to lose if it doesn't. Try using manure or mulched compost to bed it in and give it plenty of tomato feed. The old root system may even begin to re-sprout itself. Chances are it was either the wind or just gravity that broke your plant (depending on it's size) Next time try using taller canes or better still a growing trellis to cling to
