Any tips for painting kitchen cupboards?

I want to paint mine, but I wonder if anybody has used any of the specialist paints that are available? Are the "all-in-one, no undercoat needed" types any good? Has anybody done it and found the paint chipped or peeled - which paint did you use?
I have quite a lots of cupboards so want to make a good job of it 1st time round, any tips would be helpful!

Answers:
remove all handles and knobs, what you cant remove tape up ,use a light grade sandpaper, the smaller the number the coarser the paper,eg 60 is coarse 120 is fine
you can buy a product called ESP, its an etching primer, and ensures max adhesion, you apply this by cloth and wipe off after 90 Min's,its clear and you don't got to mask or tape up for this.you can now use any paint but it will only be knock about hard after a week, but dry in normal time.
or you can use the specified ronseal but may find you restricted in colors
when painting the doors or the carcases, that's the press, paint the edges first but only do 1 at a time, and then the larger areas.when you paint the large area,Lay the aint off in the direction of the wood grain, laying off is to use the brush lightly in the longest direction, which is generally the direction of the grain. The quicker you paint the better the finish, don't be in a hurry to get at the paint good preparation is the recipe for a good result.happy painting,i,v had good result with both ways
Yes, use paint and a paint brush!
I think Ronseal do a special kitchen cupboard painter - but the surfaces MUST be prepared well (as per their instructions) otherwise it will chip off really eay and look worse than before..as I found out myself!
Use primer if they have a shiny surface otherwise the paint won't dry flat.
Make certain you know what kind of paint the original is; if the original was an oil-based paint, no Latex paint will stick for long (that is often the cause of chipping); you'll need to use another oil-based paint.
Prepare your surface well, I found spraying gives the best result !
But you have to take the doors off and spray outside !
Brilliant result with specialist paint !
We painted ours with a specialist black paint that they use to create 'chalk boards'. It's great, we can make a note of recipes and leave each other funny pictures/messages and sexy notes!
I believe the stain and grain is very effective and very easy ti apply.
first--wash them with a strong solution of tsp & water (wear rubber gloves)tsp is found at most paint stores/ dept's. then rinse it with clear water & let dry. if your cupboards are melamine--then buy a good quality melamine primer. if they are a polyeurythaned wood--then ya probably will have to give them a light sanding before you prime them with a good quality suitable primer. hunt around for a good strong kitchen & bath paint. just remember--you get what you pay for. if you can't afford the best--then go for the next best.just don't go for the cheapest. After all your hard work, you'll want it to last

& yes--be sure to remove your cupboards &n drawers from their hinges & sliders & lay them flat to paint them : )
and take the knobs off
For a kitchen to look professionally fitted, it requires extra preparation. Remove doors, put a marker on each door to indicate where it came from. Wash out carcase with washing soda solutioin, rinse well.
Buy 4" foam roller and small brush, roll on undercoat, this blanks-out previous color.
If color still showing through, apply another one..
Apply finishing coat, don't use gloss, it looks crap., use silk/satin
Paint all doors inside & out, be careful of hinges,
When dry, replace doors.
Dont use strong colors, magnolia seems to be the one that professionals use.
Finally. By using undercoat you achieve a dense finish, which is not possible with a one-coat type paint.
The secret ..(shhhh-h-h-h!) . to nice painted cupboards is to remove and number doors and drawers and prep and paint them separately then let all completely dry before re-attaching them. No sticking.
Give the to a professional
ronsons wood seal it does what it says on the can.(looks like someone **** all over it).
Use paint
Try Ronseal paint and grain, its gives a real effective look . Also they do it in a variety of colours. I have used it on Doors Wardrobes its brilliant
