could be a bomb, dont mean to scare you, often find bits of bombs in my mums garden, if uyou are really unsure, call the police, they will come round to look at it
could be a piece of junk anyone can identify it?
you don't say what the shape of the "thing" is..
Well goodness it could be anything, but as previous answerer said it could be a bomb... but you dont give many details. Dont pierce it whatever you do!
I bet with all those garden bombs you don't have many problems with moles and gophers, huh?
could be anything, but you should get the police to check it out incase it is a bomb or something.
Anderson shelter, UXB, old bucket. Who knows with no details.
Well I think that is some kind of metal that was used like hundreds of years ago when you werent living in your house yet so it just got stuck underground and when you dug to make a wall in your garden maybe you found it.
Hit it with a sledgehammer you may get a Darwinaward for removing yourself from the geenpool

if you think it is an archeological find take it to a musuem, if you think its rubbish throw it away, how deep was it was it a few feet down and is it an old house or do you know of archeological finds in the area?
My guesses.. a pet coffin, a bomb, a money stash, a tool that accidentally got buried, a murder weapon. How big is it? What shape?
Maybe its a time capsule.
an old gas pipe?
Well going by your very accurate description I suspect that it could be a metal rusty dirty thing.
if on the south coast ie dover could be part of air raid shelter
I agree with the other chap, it is possibly a metal rusty dirty thing, however there is a possibility it could also be a Klingon Battle ship so i would tread very carefully indeed.
If there had been building work in the past, any debris may have been dumped in the garden and covered over, either by builders or a DIYer. It could be anything. When I was digging up my present garden, I found a couple of old metal water cisterns, lengths of rusty piping and lots of rusty nails (having read the question about the hydrangea changing colour, me thinks the rusty nails are serving a useful function .).
