How do you remove old varnish from a wooden firesurround?

Answers:
There are several options and these perhaps depend on how ornate the surround is and the time and effort you have to put into the job.

You could sand it off. You could use a paint/varnish stripper. You could burn and scrape it off. If it is removable, you could take it somewhere to have it stripped. Or you could pay someone else to do it for you!
you need to get some paint and varnish stripper ..go to BQ they will advise you witch is the best .hope this helps !!!!
You can buy proprietary varnish removers, but I've had some success using a hot air stripper and fine wire wool. Then sand with a medium/fine sand paper. However you proceed try on a small unseen area first. I hope this helps
Nitromors is very good for removing old varnish
Use paint stripper (such as Nitromors) after cleaning varnish with a warm damp cloth. (Heat the damp cloth in the microwave 15secs) Remove the lifted varnish wit a plastic pot scourer. When all varnish is removed, clean the timber with a stainless-steel scourer. I don't recommend using steel wool on timber as it can leave iron residues that discolour the timber later
why do you want to remove it? If the answer is that it is showing signs of
wear such as peeling it should be easy to help it along. Start with a coarse
sand paper and lots of elbow grease. Finish off with steel wool.
All the answers are good, but a word of advice, wear a face mask, because the fumes from the toxic removers will damage your throat.
Agreed with above - very dangerous chemicals - after use a nice wax rather than stain it will preserve the wood also and make it look gorgeous
firstly use nitromors with wire wool then if u want 2 make the wood lighter in colour try a solution of water and bleach on a small area first then make it strong enough as u need till u get the colour u want but rinse off
paintstripper , but wear gloves
