My sunflower leaves are disappearing!?
Do I have caterpillars, or is it something more sinister (I have noticed a glint in my neighbours eyes over the last few days).
Answers:
Are the leaves totally gone, or are there holes in them? Need a little bit more information please? Do you have animals around? If so use some cayenne pepper, they could be eating the plant. Especially if there are cats nearby. Just sprinkle the cayenne pepper around the plant, that will keep the animals away. If it is bugs, use sevin dust, it can be found in just about any garden area of a store. If that doesn't help, then it must be your neighbor...Good luck.I hope this helps some.
maybe the plant has outgrown itself
loss of leaves is normally due to the plant being to dry through lack of water is it against a wall?
try watering and give it a good feed as well caterpillers will eat holes in it not remove complete leaves
if that does'nt work try cctv camera
Chipmunks, squirrels, earwigs and slugs are just a few garden pests that will eat your sunflower leaves. They can destroy the whole plant.
Use nature's tricks. Plants have evolved their own pesticides such as caffeine and nicotine. Dump some chewing tobacco or coffee grounds in your watering can to make a less toxic pesticidal tea. Apply generously whenever you water.
To get rid of slugs, put out a pan of beer. This will lure slugs to a drunken death. (Note: Don't drink the beer afterwards).
If you suspect squirrels or chipmunks, try offering them sunflower seeds (away from your plants) and they may leave your seedlings alone. Cayenne pepper sprinkled on the plants is a good deterrent but I have seen some squirrels gobble that up too.
Best wishes and happy gardening!
I'm guessing rabbits-they keep eating mine as well! If you find a cure for the problem please let me know.
This is the first year that I have grown sunflowers and the same thing has happened to me on a few of my plants so far. I believe that the plants have reached maturity when this occurs - harvesting of the seeds can begin soon. I understand that your plant is still small but there could be a few factors involved. Either there is/was not enough nutrients in the soil to support it growing to its full potential, or possibly it was a transplant that did not get moved to a larger container early enough and thereby had its roots stunted? I am sure that there are other possiblities but those are the two most obvious. Remember also that most sunflower plants reach maturity in 70-90 days. Check the species information for more details.
