When pruning roses whats the best way of identifing suckers?

Sometimes the suckers stand out as brambles but others look like a normal rose

suckers on roses are usually born at the base of the stem and are a light green colour and are smooth without thorns.
i think it has some thing to do with the amount of leaves,, is it not seven but nine?
a sucker is normally greener and lankyer then the rose it is on
seven leaves.
normal stems have 5 leaves suckers have 7 leaves
