What is the best type of paint for painting skirting boards?

I use satin gloss. It is just as hard wearing as gloss but not as shiny. It looks more natural and costs the same.

Use an oil base paint for best results. First prep the skirting boards with an oil base primer. Do not skimp on this or you will be repainting next year. The key is a good clean surface and then a good oil primer. Depending what you are skirting then you can judge if you want to use a lower grade of paint. But remember the key is the primer.
Top of the line Sherman Williams paint or Benjamin Moore are good products that I like to use.
If you don't like gloss, try satin paint or sandback and use woodstain. Whatever you do, you need to sand the first layer before repainting, just lightly, as this will give you a better finish. Use masking tape to make sure you don't get paint on your wallpaper.

use either gloss paint or for a more country look just varnish the boards. however, the most important thing is preparation - make sure its all rubbed down and clean before you even get the tin of paint or varnish open. the better your starting surface the better a finish you will get. have fun!

if the wood is new .
buy a bottle of knotting and apply 2 coats on all the knots on the skirting this will stop the knots from bleeding later on and coming through the paint work.
apply oil based primer then 1 or 2 coats of oil based undercoat.
and finely apply oil based liquid gloss.
when buying gloss make sure its good quality ( dulux, crown )
also you can buy for example white gloss which will stay whiter longer so it doesn't discolour and go creamy yellowafter a year or two.
if your skirting is brand new try stain (colour of your choice) then a clear varnish this looks really good and expensive, if your skirting is old and dates use gloss u can get a variety of colours but always prepare your skirting first, clean, sand and undercoat this gives a higher quality finish and lasts longer.
Non-drip gloss. Also, paint into wet gloss, not away from it.
if bare wood. prime, then undercoat. sand lightly with very fine sandpaper. wash with a lint free cloth with white spirit, then when dry paint with Dulux gloss. dulux is more expensive but the finish is so much better than cheap gloss.
