Any ideas for locks for a wooden back gate?
prefer to be able to use from both side but not the sturdiest of constructionbut need security mainly from inside
Answers:
Tie a knot in it, that should keep it closed.
hasp and padlock one side, or chain around both sides you can reach from either
if the gate is too tall to reach over then use a latch , this can be opened from in and outside and will just hold the gate shut but not lock it.
Then fix a sliding bolt seperately on the inside , this has facilty to add a padlock for extra security.
A sliding bolt can also be added to the outside which would share the same padlock but it is unsightly and wouldnt hold off a determined entry because they would ahve access to it.
If the gate is of solid construction rather than individual lats, then a yale lock would be the most suitable. This would be the easiest to fit requiring an inch drill bit to make a hole.there may be a little chiselling of the timber in some cases but its just to make it striker seat well and its not too complicated
A good old fashioned rim lock like you get on old back doors. It sits on the inside face of the door on the surface so is easy to install. It can also be bought with knob on each side. Go to a hardware store.
