Had the same problem in last house. Despite moral objections, I went to Ikea and my life was instantly better!

Use height as much as possible - ie get the tallest cupboard that will fit in your rooms, that way you store more in the same floor area. If you have alcoves (between wall a chimney) put up some easy shelves in them. If necessary to tidy them up, put doors on front.

Get foldy beds (z-beds) or inflating matresses rather than normal beds, if you don't have frequent guests in spare bedrooms.

Chuck things out - frequently. Don't keep anything you haven't used for a while. Sentimentality is the nemesis of the space-saver!

Buy smaller furniture - two seater sofa rather than three seater. I did this and bought a small coffee table from Ikea with two pull out boxes on wheels. Not only could you store stuff underneath, but it meant you could use them as extra seats!

MOST IMPORTANTLY - DO NOT LOSE HEART! Your home is where you are supposed to feel comfortable and relaxed, not be a source of stress itself!

Best of luck.
Buy a Chalet style shed and use it as a study / office / store room quest house etc
A coffee table with compartments is a good start. Otherwise i think you'll have to be selective with what you display.
I offer you to use Google Notebook (www.google.com/notebook) for storing tips. It can capture texts and images from web, can be integrated into IE or Firefox and can be searched.

What else you want?
Ikea is best for that sort of stuff, I've found.
If you're a hoarder like me, the best storage method is either a skip or the local tip. The problem is parting with such valuable junk which I know I will both definitely need and which will eventually be worth a fortune because you can't get ... like that any more (fill in the dots with anything whatsoever)!
Adjust the mindset. Get rid of clutter! Be realistic with yourself. Avoid "that might some in useful one day". That is a warning signal. Look at storage as costly baggage the drags you down. Use space under the bed & over the bed -cupboards. High shelves over internal doors. Over the stairs space can often be used to build an extra cupboard that can be accessed from a bedroom. Folding furniture - chairs, beds, good quality bed settees etc. 4 foot bed if you get on well with yor partner! plastic stackable storage boxes from Access are great. Look at everything allow your partner to challenge your concept of what you should keep. Have you got old cutlery, books, pans, childhood memorobilia! university notes!! Be radical. Be free. Good luck.
