My economy 7 immersion heater doesn't work. are there any test to do find out what's wrong?

I have an economy 7 system with a water heater. Normally the system heats the water up at night and i have atank full of hot water for the next day. Are there any test that i can do to find out what the problem is before i call in a plumber?

Answers:
if you know what your doing use an ohm meter accrost the heater element terminals ,then check out the thermostat, when was the last time you flushed the tank to remove sediment accumulated in the bottom, could be that the tank is so full of crud, you are not heating water, but the crud that was leeched out of the water.
These are usually on a "radial" circuit - ie. the only thing on that circuit from the fusebox or circuit breakers.

Therefore, the first thing to do is check that the fuse hasn't blown or the circuit breaker tripped. If so, replacing or resetting them should get it working again, but don't forget that there has to be a reason for them blowing or tripping in the first place.
Try the BOOST setting, if that heats the water then you DONT have a faulty element or thermostat in the immersion heater. BUT it depends on whether you have a single heater, a dual element or two separate heaters and also whether you have an Economy 7 time switch with a built in timer, and one or two supplies from your consumers unit(s). So it could be a faulty timer, or timers, thermostat, element, fuse, CB, switch, or a burnt out terminal or connection. Dont call a plumber, call an electrician!
maybe you accidentally switched off/ changed the timer.how is the water heated? if it is an electrical tank then the heating element might need to be replaced. this needs to be done by an electrician. if its a gas powered tank then (after checking the timer/ fuse) go straight to a plumber.
