What is the best technique for painting a banister (stair rail)?

I would like to paint the banisters on the stairs, but I am not experienced with gloss paint. I am frightend that the paint will run/drip and will look messy. Can anyone give me some tips. Many thanks.

If your not confident painting the stair rail, try doing a couple of pencil drawings first. When you feel a little more confident and you are happy with the perspective and light maybe experiment with water colours. If any paint does drip its easy to clean or you could always say it was the effect you where looking for anyway. I've exhibited many paintings of stairs locally, I'm even getting a bit of a reputation for them. Good luck
with a brush
no brushes. you are foam roller. they are about 3 in wide and they kinda look like a hair curler. prime the railing first if it is new wood. if it is already painted and it is glossy you can use a primer that will go over that old paint. BIN123 make a graet primer. the paint that is on there now is it oil or latex? you may want to sand the railing too be for you paint. use making paper and that blue tape by 3M it works great and u wont leave any messes. the foam roller wont leave brush marks. but you may have to paint like 2 -3 coats. I hope this helps
It's hard to screw it up.

Get can of paint, get brush, remove any loose paint on said banisters, and just don't apply the stuff too thick. It won't run or anything unless you really slop it all on there.
Use a good brush. Purdy brand and some good expensive paint. Load your brush but knock most of the paint out of it in the bucket. You dont want very much paint on the brush. 2 or 3 thin coats are better then one thick driping coat.

Paint slow but dont go over it when it is tacky. that is where brush marks come from. Cover the area and move on let it dry.

Sand lightly and put on a second coat.
Traditionally bannister rails were not painted, just varnished, and then with constant use they developed a patina which lasted forever. Bring back to plain wood, sand, and varnish

Use non-drip gloss, don't over-load the brush (two thin coats are better than one thick one). Make sure you have sanded as best you can, then wipe the bannisters with a lint-free cloth with white spirit on it before you start. Good luck!
to get someone else to do it
you need to prime the wood with a wood priming paint, then a non drip gloss. Never overload the brush and always put the application of gloss on slowly. You will need two layers for gloss. Personally if your stairs is natural wood why not treat or vanish? Natural wood is beautiful.
if you want it to look good and it`s chipped your best bet is to get a pro in just get more than 1 quote
